If you're working in After Effects 6.5 or 7 it could be as simple as making sure the playhead is at the In point of the layer before applying the animation preset. The keyframes for presets are applied starting at the playhead's current position.
If you just want to see what the presets look like, go to ANIMATION > Browse Presets and it'll open a window that shows all the presets for text and background animation and etc. You can apply presets to the selected layer directly from Bridge by double clicking on the one you want.
