looking over the link, the key to most of their stuff is a good sense of design and particles. with the right plugins you can achieve this kind of looking stuff relatively easily, espeically combined with an eye for design. try checking out trapcode plugins, especially particular and 3d stroke. they're used commonly because they're inexpensive, fast to create from scratch, and look good.... there's a lot to be gained, though, from creating moving mattes, in a 3d space, moving a camera around, with a few particles, some deep rich colours and depth of focus play... apologies if that sounds vague, but if you're looking for a more specific answer, try picking something you'd like to immitate, and posing the question of how is it done. this can be a great way to get started.
