What format of .MOV files did he convert them to? .MOV is a can...a container. It contains one of dozens of codecs...DV, HDV, ProRes, Animation, DVCPRO HD...the list goes on and on and on. What did he convert the .mts files too?

.MTS, by the way, indicates that his camera shoots AVCHD...a format that your version of FCP cannot deal with, as that format came out years AFTER FCP 5 was introduced. And yes, you need an Intel Mac to convert AVCHD to anything really. And FCP 5 doesn't work with ProRes, the default codec to convert it too.

Is your machine too old for HD video? no. Just current HD formats. It works fine with HDV and DVCPRO HD. But not AVCHD, RED, AVCIntra, H.264 from DSLR cameras, XDCAM... It's pretty old.
