Re: AVID Project in FCP

[Duane Fulk] " Is it possible to open AVID projects with all the timeline and effects that are in the original?"

No. You can export an EDL of the cut and then use Automatic Duck to import, then recapture. Or export an AAF of the cut, and then FCP can open that and link to the existing media, also using Automatic Duck. Both options will bring over a lot of the effects, but not all.

http://www.automaticduck.com. Look at PRO IMPORT

But BIN STRUCTURE? No, that won't come over. I wonder if you can export AAFs of each individual bin...that bears testing.

[Duane Fulk] "Also, what is the best way to transfer AVID media to FCP. Quicktime is obvious, but what is needed to accomplish this?"

Again, Automatic Duck Pro Import. Export an AAF, and the ProImport will bring in the sequence and create reference QT files that point to that media. Make sure you install all the Avid Codecs on the FCP system.

[Duane Fulk] "And finally, if I have Boris effects in the original timeline will FCP work with Boris to keep these effects?"

I don't think so...in fact, I highly doubt it.

[Duane Fulk] "Oh, yeah, I assume I will have to recreate all my lower thirds, right?"

Actually, no. The AAF or EDL import actually keeps those.

But why do this NOW? Why not stick with the Avid for the exisiting project, then move to FCP after? Changing horses mid stream is only asking for headache. Can be done, but won't be smooth. Rife with potential issues. Taking a finished cut is one thing, but an entire project mid edit?
