It sounds like the DVD is playing the center 4x3 portion of your 16x9 image (therby cutting off the sides) on your roommate's TV. Was this the way you wanted it to play or did you want to see a letter-boxed 16x9 image on a 4x3 TV? If so, I'm sure there's a control in the program that made your DVD that would allow this. In DVD Studio Pro you'd choose Letterbox instead of Pan-Scan.
