Hi Jason,

You forgot to ask another important question, which is: Can I use my startup drive for storing video files or do I need to have a dedicated media drive? Answer: You need a media drive with a minimum of a firewire 800 connection. A SATA drive connection is even better. This is probably why your Mac/FCP system won't play back the video without dropping frames, especially if you're editing with a Pro Rez sequence. Editing at the highest quality possible is a great idea, as long as your system can handle the higher playback demands you're asking of your system.
