There is no user preference for stereo or mono except for capturing material. The Kat Interview clip is I believe in stereo. I can't remember if other clips were in mono or stereo. Perhaps you edited only one channel into the timeline. In which case it would be mono when opened into the viewer. There is no way for the disc to be defective so as to convert the file from stereo to mono.
