OT: Can you use an external monitor with imovie8?

I'm trying to help someone get going with imovie 8. We had the external monitor working fine during capture though firewire to the dv camera but the signal is lost when you close the capture window.
Any one know if imovie8 allows external monitor viewing during editing?
