Need to redig clips only,not whole orig media- Is it possible?

Having problems... seems that everybody i talk to, just digs everything high hi rez to avoid this issue....
i need to dig 12 hrs of films. So, after building a cut, duplicating the sequence, making seq clips independent, cntrl clicking sequence to open media manager, creating offline without including master clip, opening new project, making sequence clips independent, batch capture,.....it still says it's digging 2 hrs..... HELP!
I'm on fcp 5.1... dual 2 pci-e... kona lhe
