Best capture settings for VHS / SVHS / Hi8

Greetings,
Please forgive this rather newbie question, but we are trying to archive old analog footage and after capturing at 720 x 480 8 bit uncompressed have realized that we're burning too much drive space (50GB per hour or so).
We can capture on PC or Mac and were wondering what the best capture setting would be for our purposes while using the minimal drive space possible. I'm deathly afraid of lossy compression - especially given this is an archival project.
Many thanks!
Paul
