This video must have been done in a very big hurry. There is no creativity here; as Filip says, lots of clichés. However, sports videos don't seem to care that everybody and their mother uses these effects; it's almost like it's part of sports.
Stuart also makes a good point. You will need to read the manual. After Effects is a very powerful program, but that means there is a lot to learn. You can use AE for many years and still learn new things almost daily with it.
