Yes, an i7-based machine should give you very nice performance.
To take advantage of multiprocessing, make sure you get at least 2 GB of RAM per core. So, in a quad core machine, you want at least 8GB of RAM. Otherwise, you will probably have to tell AE to use just two of the available cores.
