'Tracer bullets' expression?

I have been asked to add some tracer fire to footage of World War I biplanes dogfighting. The scenes will be shot in France this summer and will be on standard def. Can anyone think of a simple way of tying tracking to the direction of Particular? Ideally I would just like to track the plane (one or two points) and then feed this information into Particular to give the direction of the particles, possibly using a light to simulate a 3D path.
Thanks
