The reason adobe don't mention xp is purely because Microsft have ditched xp. They want all companies to work with Vista. As you know Cs3 work's relatively okay on xp 64 and it was never listed by adobe. You would be pretty safe in taking a punt on CS4 working but be ready for the posibility that it may not. Meaning you'll have to install vista 64.
Personally I'd stay with CS3. Your not going to get that much better performance from CS4. I've read heaps of posts with people having performance issues. Adobe has just released an update for CS4 a few days ago. So Hopefully it's alll smooth sailing with CS4 now...
But at the end of the day CS4 isn't a 64 bit program and you may have to upgrade to Vista. Save yourself some cash. If you want performance increase, make sure you've got nucleo pro 2, at least 2 gig of ram per core and even look at getting a better graphics card.
I was shattered when I found out CS4 wasn't 64 bit. Eyeon Fusion and Nuke are 64 bit programs though.
