[chance norris] "I have been experiencing Image Buffer Errors on export and during previews with version 7.0."

ae7 is only powerpc based, so if you have an intel-mac (macpro, mackbook, later imac, etc), ae7 has to run under rosetta (powerpc emulation). i would guess that apple is less concerned with rosetta working well with later os versions and updates, it was just a stop-gap for a period of time until intel-native versions of software was available for intel-macs. so that may be your problem with ae7.

there was also a long set of things to do to get ae7 to run well on intel-macs... reduce the max memory usage drastically (like from 120% to 60% or 30%) and the ram cache from 60% to 30% or 15% respectively), disable opengl and avoid using the bundled cc effects... even after those i still saw frequent image buffer errors that were not fixed until the intel-native cs3.

[chance norris] "Just downloaded trial version of CS4 and now can't preview in realtime on playback. Preview plays at 5 fps."

if you are hitting zero on the numbers pad for ram previews, then the only thing i can think of for slow ram preview playback is that you are playing back through a video output card (decklink, aja, etc) and there are some setting that need to be tweaked to get realtime playback (or just set video preview to montior only).
