There's your problem right there. And to read the Adobe propaganda, you wouldn't even know it WAS a problem, because Adobe says AE supports mpeg compression. The truth is, it doesn't.

That's because mpeg is temporally compressed / long-GOP / interframe compressed. This kind of compression finds duplicated information across a few frames and gets rid of the excess information. Thus, in-between frames (between so-called keyframes containing complete frame information) have incomplete information.

However, AE wants to have complete information for EACH AND EVERY frame. When it encounters footage like MPEG, AE freaks out.

The fix: convert the footage to a lossless codec. Since I'm a Mac guy, I recommend Quicktime's Animation codec set to best quality. If you're in Windows-land, you're on your own in choosing a codec.
