I've got the same issues. Whatever you do, don't buy CS4 until they fix CS3.
Adobe is the new Microsoft. Fat, too many frills, and very unstable. Not to mention the need to activate a product repeatedly. and like Microsoft, they just don't seem to care.
I've been using Photoshop and After Effects for over twenty years and I've had enough - no more upgrades.
