Multiple streams of video, such as layered video in your edit system.

Any edit system worth its salt can work with them, but not all external hard drives can keep up with the bitrate necessary for smooth playback. The problem gets worse if you work in HD, because the bitrate is even higher. You may find yourself having to render every time you add new video or modify your edit timeline. If you can put up with the grief and delay, go for it.
