You could try setting AE to purge frames if it can't do the whole comp in one go (hold down shift and then select prefs, keeping shift held down and then a new menu item should appear at the bottom - 'secret' in AE7/8 and I think 'schecret' in 6.5?) set it to purge XX number of frames to suit how early it's crashing. Usually 10-15 frames is a good place to start)
That said - I am working on massive 7000 x 700 pix comps at the mo and even purging EVERY frame is not working for me!
Another option of course is to break your render up into bits and then bolt them together afterwards...
