I haven't played TOO much with the "Fractal Noise" effect other than to do a forcefield.. I've seen it used as smoke in a few tutorials but nothing I can remember..

just play with the settings and masking until you find something you like...

could do a search for "fractal noise smoke tutorial" and see what comes up
