I want to make a crater

hey everyone, so I want to make an effect and am not sure if after effects is the right tool for it. I'm going to have agreed screen shot of some feet slamming into the ground. When that happens I want a crater to appear (really just cracks in the rock) and have dust fly up. I think I can manage the dust in motion but am not sure what to do abouut the rock cracking. Any ideas?
