32 bit "Super White Colors" on Cinema Display Only

Well, I found a solution while writing this but now I'm just curious.
I have been playing around with super-white colors in 32bit, and just noticed that in order to monitor the colors on my broadcast monitor, I have to have a layer underneath the layer I'm working on.
For example, if I just do a simple blur to a super-white text, I can see the colors bleed through on my cinema display, but unless I put a solid or video layer underneath the text layer, my broadcast monitor (panasonic BT-LH1700W) basically just shows what the alpha channel looks like.
Any ideas as to why this is?
Joey
