I think you got most of it under your belt, I'm just not sure what you're asking with this last question.
QuickTime is displaying the pixels as they are, only in square pixels. Since widescreen PAL pixels are wider than they are tall the image will be stretched out horizontally when displayed on a widescreen PAL display
even though the pixels are the exact same pixels that QuickTime is displaying
. Since QuickTime is displaying these pixels as square pixels, the image appears to be squeezed (or, put another way, the pixels appear to be
not stretched
).
