Well... I think you could pull it off just in AE, but on the other hand it would be much easier just to do it in 3D. Take a look at my tutorial at:

Maybe this will give you some ideas. Feel free to contact me directly by skype (chat mode). You can find the contact info on my website. If we'll figure this out together than we'll post a solution in here. Sounds cool?
