...and to confuse matters even more, the
actual
horizontal and vertical resolution of the 16x9 MPEG2 will remain 720x480, just like a 4x3 MPEG2 file.
When Quicktime has to deal with certain (but not all) non-square pixel aspect ratios, it likes to play with numbers.
