There's a gravity script that's included in the demopalette.jsx scripts. It works very well for this kind of stuff. File>Scripts>Demo Palette.jsx (i think)

I'd try applying the gravity simulation to a null then linking your null to a 3D layer using a value + position expression. Then you could keyframe a bit of extra motion to position that may make it look better. You could also animate the orientation with just a few keyframes to add to the effect.
