Follow the tutorial it's simple to do. I was interested in this effect as well so I created an example. I have the text on their own layers and changed the blending mode to overlay with 100% opacity. In the tutorial you create the splines freehand, but I traced the outline of the text and shape on a single solid to make the text more readable
