Is it possible to BREAK a mask?

I know it's possible to join the first and the last vertex of a path to make a closed mask. Is this possible in reverse?
e.g. A flame has been autotraced (outlined) and now I want to apply an animated Stroke to it, but it has to start at both sides at the bottom and meet up at the point at the top. I know I could draw the outline (two paths) myself....but if it was possible to break it instead that would save me some time...
so...anyone?
