Best way for AE & Ppro to communicate in synch?

I have Ppro 1.5 and AE 6.5 standard. Wondering how in 'synch' they can be. For example I am creating a few custom transitions by overlaying a video clip, changing the opacity, blend mode, etc. Right now I just import the two clips, overlay the transition, export and re-import into Premiere. Is this the easiest way to do that? I know CS3 is all about using the programs in synch. What about my versions? Any easier way to create effects in AE and using them in premiere beside doing: import, create effect, save, reimport into Premiere?
Thanks
