For anyone interested, I found a good cheater way to make 3d text. I just created my text image in photoshop. I used a bold faced font and created a metallic look for it. Or you can download metallic styles from the adobe exchange. Then placed my text in AE, created a 3d animation using the Y axis, so it rotates left to right off in the distance. Then applied a CC spotlight to match the field of depth animation. Adding that spotlight to the metallic text really makes it look 3d. Just applying it to plain text doesn't get the effect at all. But matching the spotlight to the movement and the shine off the metallic text looks top notch.
