For me, the devil is in the details. The light beam effect is not in the same 3D space as the lighthouse, but if you closely examine the top of the lighthouse, the beam does appear to make that transition from in-front-of to behind. I did this by splitting the beam layer and changing the opacity of the sections duuring the critical phase. The light beam also appears to affect the light on the front of the lighthouse. It doesn't, but I used another bit of trickery to fake it.
