Actually, I've already been there and done that for a recent project.

Lux is one great solution, but there is another good one. I did the beam with Tinderbox T_beam. I used the rotating beacon to reveal the client logo and gave it some glow every time the beam passed behind it.

I built the Lighthouse using Zaxwerks Invigorator and a single custom bevel. I threw in some animated sky and Psunami for the water. It worked very well.
