I ran into the same problem a couple of weeks ago, with a canvas size of 8700X5333. Evidently, its a lack of memory that causes the problem. Some tricks you can do that worked for me is:
Edit/Purge
Lower your Redo count.
Have no other programs running while you are in After effects.
Check your Memory/Cache info in Preferences
Crop the images in Photoshop so they are smaller in After Effects (In my case I was able to crop the image into say 4 chunks, that way I was able to keep the quality and lower the canvas size)
