Come to think of it, there may be a fireworks tutorial available for download on the Trapcode web site, using the Particular plugin. As I recall, it's easily modified to make fireworks of different durations and colors. Getting the explosions to assume different shapes (e.g. a ring) would be time-consuming, if not darned near impossible.

But there's another option for you.
