[SPACE MAN]
"Is SPACEMAN missing something simple?"
Yup: except for machines with Final Cut Pro installed on them, ProRes 422 is a read-only codec.
But wait! There is a very good cross-platform read-write codec with the same virtues of excellent image quality and reasonable file size, one of its flavors supports alpha channels... and it's free! It's Avid's DNxHD codec, downloadable from the Avid Web Site for both Mac and Win.
Enjoy.
