Precomposing animation

I have animated a shape using the puppet tool in comp 1. I want to move it to comp 2 and animate the position/scale in that comp. I was under the impression that I just use precompose to achieve this. When I precompose the shape and then drag it in to comp2, all of the puppet tool animations are in tact but as soon as I change the position, the shape reverts to its original settings before I added the puppet tool effect...What am I doing wrong?
