SAN setup for 3 DSLR edit stations

I've worked solo for years, first on Avid, then FCP. I've been asked to set up 3 Premiere Pro rooms to edit HD rushes from DSLR, working concurrently from one shared storage.
I read Bob Zelin's 4-year-old piece on building your own SAN, using Small Tree networking hardware and aggregated links. I also read his more recent post in which he said, "We NEVER EVER do this anymore. There are much better solutions for the same money."
Having looked at the off-the-shelf solutions like Terrablock and Space, I get the impression that these are more than we need and over our budget; a DIY solution may yet be the answer.
If there's anyone out there that's done something similar recently, and can shed light on "the much better solutions…" I'd sure appreciate the input.
Thank you for your time.
