P2 Log Pro is pretty good for viewing clips and editing metadata like UserClipName in the field and it's a lot cheaper than FCS. Only problem is that Final Cut doesn't bring most of that information in when you import the clips, unless you use Raylight, which can incorporate your edited UserClipName metadata into a new clip name within FCP. The only other way I know of is to use the export to FCP XML option in P2 Log Pro. This creates an XML which you open to import the clips and the metadata. Only problem with that is P2 Log Pro will convert all your clips to Quicktimes as part of that process and things can get messy and tricky if you start moving the XML's and/or clips around later.
I would recommend, setting metadata in camera to create custom incrementing UserClipNames. Copy your cards off to a drive and then use Raylight to get them into FCP at your earliest convenience.
This takes care of the naming for you. Now you can do proper logging in the Description, Logging Notes, etc, fields in FCP. This way the info is in FCP where you need it
