That high ISO is going to be grainy no matter what. If it were up to me, I'd try to obtain a faster prime lens, run it wide open in aperture priority mode, and back off that ISO.

I have a 35mm f/1.8 that works great in available light with my D40... of course it's not a zoom, but there aren't really any zoom options past f/2.8. Of course, you could splurge for a 50mm f/1.4 as well.
If you're doing stuff like this all the time, make sure your next camera is full frame (like a D700).

Other than buying equipment or using flashes, I'd make sure you shoot RAW and see what you can accomplish in Photoshop. Sometimes the noise reduction is impressive, but you will lose some detail.
