You can use Flash.
If you use a rollover you can easly replace your image but with no fade.
You can also create a div with a background image, then palce the second image in front. Select your second image and apply the Appear/Fade behavior (look for it in the behaviors panel, opening the puls menu, in the effects subsection).
If you are not familiar with rollovers, CSS or behaviors you can ask again.
