the rule was/is to never change processor types during a project since differences in the processors (mostly in the floating point unit)can make different results for things that are doing movement that uses a floating point (particles/mograph)etc. This is important going from AMD to intel and used to be huge for pre-intel ppc Macs. But even going from intel to intel could be a problem, I don't know if there any issues going from core or core 2 to xeon now (or if that's really your problem)
