I think you have to bake the CMotion animation before you can clone the animated character. The easiest way to do that is to use the Animate>Add Motion Clip command. So, select your character mesh, run the command, and when the dialogue box pops up, leave the default settings but check the PLA box. Then delete the skin deformer. Now you should be able to clone the animated character (check the cloner's "render instances" box to speed things up).
