You have to turn on PLA. Its the button under your timeline with all the dots.
edit/ I made a speaker last year that grew into the picture too. I scaled the box in four pieces but first I had made the speaker with a spline and circle in a sweep nurbs.. Then I animated the growth of the sweep nurbs so it was full size to start but it rotated into the pic...I couldnt find the animation but here is a still of the final speaker.
