breaking/deforming/exploding part of an object

Hi everyone
I've built an ISS-type space station and want to have an asteroid hit part of it, breaking through an arm/support and dent another section. Is there a way to limit the range of a deformer or explosion?
In After Effects, I'd use shatter and drop the force's radius down. Do I have to make smaller components to achive the look I'm after?
