You would give the object a display tag and then animate the visibility parameter.
If you don't want the back side of your geometry to show through as it fades in/out, do the following:
*give your object a compositing tag;
*go the tag's exclusion tab and drag your object into it;
*click the transparency icon to the right of your object in the exclude box to activate it (straight arrow going through line).
