Getting a new MBP - Solid State HD or Standard HD????
by Phil Hoppes on Oct 25, 2009 at 2:15:26 pm

My wife's laptop is going south for ever. Rather than put good money after bad, I'm going to give her my MBP and get a new one for me and my company. Up until now (just got a 7D. WOW!) all my FCP work has been in SD so all of the headaches of recompressing, high speed external drives, et.al. that everyone else has been suffering with doing HD editing, I've not had to worry much about. In just loading some short HD clips on to my current MB I was more than a little bit floored (data rate shock) on what a drag HD is. I use an external FW drive for my capture scratch but even with that things are jerky.

My main editing machine is still my MacPro but I do work with my laptop, especially when I am not at home so my question is, if you experience HD editors out there were getting a new MacBookPro would you get it with SSD or standard HD? My selections currently are 500Gb 5400 ATA, 500GB 7400ATA or a 256GB SSD. From what I have read, the SSD drives are screaming compared to standard HD. I was wondering if it really would make that much difference to justify about $600 more in the price.
