Others have covered the topic of why not to do it, so I'll concentrate on overcoming it.
More than likely, there is some corruption in the project at this point.
1) Make a completely new project and save it with a different name.
2) Open the old one project inside the new one (temporarily).
3) select all the clips on the sequence in the old project and copy all the clips
4) paste the clips in the sequence in the new project
5) close the old project, leaving just the new one open
6) save the new project
That should solve the corruption...
