DV capture question

I don't use DV capture much any more, but recently have started to do some and have a question.
When we capture using a non-tape source, trying to capture directly instead of using a tape, (Pinnacle or Canopus converter, or using a DVCam or DVCpro Deck to convert composite NTSC to DV) There are little black bars on the side. Capture from DV or DVC pro tape does not have this. Is this normal, some setting, or???
In this studio setting we are capturing and then outputting to many different files (quicktime, mp3, enhanced podcast, etc.) We don't want to lay off to tape unless we have to.
Using FCP 6.0.5 and OS 10.5.7.
Thanks.
