System Drive Clone

Just wondering about this before I try it. Hope some of you might know.

Can I buy a new HD and stick it into one of the spare drive bays in my Mac Pro, then clone the system drive to it, then swap out the drives?

I figure if this works, it will save the the time of cloning the contents back to the new System Hard Drive with the larger capacity.

I really don't want to reinstall everything from scratch, as I have lost and damaged some of my software discs.
