Have you tried other Firewire items on the same port you are using? It kind of sounds like the firewire port might be loose so that the camera is not making a good connection. Do you have an old external hard drive you can try to test? Just make sure there is nothing on the drive that you want to keep as it might corrupt the drive. If you have any connection problems with the drive you will know. If two separate cameras won't connect, I really think it's a hardware issue or a cable issue.
